Focus on clinical application, not device troubleshooting. Your role is to assess whether a wearable device addresses a functional need, recommend the appropriate device category, train the client on the features relevant to their occupational performance, and interpret the data for clinical decision-making.
You do not need to set up WiFi networks, troubleshoot Bluetooth connections, or manage software updates. Direct those tasks to the client's family members, the device manufacturer's support line, or a tech-savvy volunteer.
Setting Boundaries
- Include wearable technology recommendations in your assessment and intervention documentation
- Provide clients with manufacturer support contact information at the time of recommendation
- Limit your training to the clinically relevant features, not the full device tutorial
- Build a resource list of local tech support options for older adults (many libraries and senior centers offer free technology help)
